Understanding Your Credit Score

Your credit score is a 3-digit number (300–850) that tells lenders how likely you are to repay borrowed money. 📊 Score ranges: • 800–850: Exceptional • 740–799: Very Good • 670–739: Good • 580–669: Fair • 300–579: Poor This number affects your ability to rent apartments, get loans, and even land certain jobs.

Your score is built from 5 factors: 📊 Payment History (35%) — Do you pay on time? 💳 Credit Utilization (30%) — How much of your limit do you use? ⏳ Length of History (15%) — How long have you had credit? 🆕 New Credit (10%) — How many recent applications? 📋 Credit Mix (10%) — Types of credit you have Payment history + utilization = 65% of your score!

What two factors make up 65% of your credit score? Payment history (35%) and credit utilization (30%) together make up 65% of your score—focus here for the biggest impact!

Jordan had a 580 credit score and was denied an apartment lease. Instead of giving up, Jordan learned the credit game: 1. Set up autopay on all bills 2. Got a secured credit card with a $500 limit 3. Kept utilization under 30% ($150 max balance) 4. Never missed a payment for 12 months Result? Score jumped to 710 in one year. Jordan got approved for a nicer apartment with no extra deposit.

A credit score isn't permanent. Consistent on-time payments and low utilization can dramatically improve your score in 6-12 months.

What credit utilization ratio should you aim for? Keeping utilization under 30% shows lenders you're responsible. Under 10% is even better for top scores!
