What Is FIRE?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. 🔥 The core idea: Save and invest aggressively so your investment income covers your living expenses—giving you the CHOICE to stop working. 💡 "Retire" doesn't mean sitting on a beach forever. It means work becomes OPTIONAL. Most people pursuing FIRE still work—they just do work they LOVE because they don't need the paycheck.

FIRE relies on two numbers: 1️⃣ Your annual expenses 2️⃣ Your FIRE number (25× annual expenses) Example: • Annual expenses: $40,000 • FIRE number: $40,000 × 25 = $1,000,000 Why 25×? Because you can safely withdraw 4% per year from your investments (the "4% Rule"). $1,000,000 × 4% = $40,000/year in passive income 📊 The less you spend, the faster you reach FIRE!

If your annual expenses are $50,000, what's your FIRE number? $50,000 × 25 = $1,250,000. At a 4% withdrawal rate, $1.25M generates $50,000/year in passive income!

Jamie earns $80,000 and spends $60,000 (saving 25%). At this rate, Jamie reaches FIRE in about 32 years. Taylor also earns $80,000 but spends $40,000 (saving 50%). Taylor reaches FIRE in about 17 years. Same income. Same career. But Taylor achieves freedom 15 years sooner because spending less has a DOUBLE effect: 1. More money saved each year 2. Lower FIRE number needed

Your savings RATE matters more than your income. Cutting expenses has a double effect: you save more AND need less to be financially independent.

What matters MOST for reaching FIRE? Your savings rate is the single biggest factor. A high savings rate both increases what you invest AND decreases what you need!
