Tax Brackets Demystified

The biggest misconception in personal finance: ❌ "If I earn more, I'll lose money to a higher tax bracket!" This is completely FALSE. Here's how it actually works: ✅ Only the income WITHIN each bracket is taxed at that rate. A raise NEVER makes you take home less. Moving up a bracket is always a WIN.

Example on $60,000 income (2024 single filer): 📊 First $11,600 → taxed at 10% = $1,160 📊 $11,601-$47,150 → taxed at 12% = $4,266 📊 $47,151-$60,000 → taxed at 22% = $2,827 💰 Total tax: $8,253 (effective rate: ~13.8%) NOT $13,200 (22% of everything)! Marginal brackets save you thousands.

You're in the 22% tax bracket earning $60,000. Your boss offers a $5,000 raise. How much of the raise do you keep? Only the new $5,000 is taxed at 22% ($1,100 in tax). You keep ~$3,900. A raise ALWAYS increases your take-home pay!

Two rates to know: 📊 Marginal rate: The tax rate on your LAST dollar earned (your bracket) 📊 Effective rate: Your ACTUAL overall tax percentage If you're in the 22% bracket, you're NOT paying 22% on everything—your effective rate is much lower. Effective rate is what actually matters for your budget.
