Bank Account Types

Banks offer different accounts for different purposes: 🏦 Checking account: Daily spending, bill payments 💰 Savings account: Storing money you don't need right now 📈 High-yield savings: Same as savings but 10-50x the interest 💿 CD (Certificate of Deposit): Lock money away for higher rates 💳 Money market: Hybrid of checking + savings Most people need at least checking + savings.

Think of them as partners: 🏃 Checking = your spending wallet • Unlimited transactions • Debit card access • Very low or no interest 🐢 Savings = your parking lot for cash • Limited transfers (usually 6/month) • Higher interest • Meant for money you won't touch daily

Why shouldn't you keep all your money in checking? Checking accounts earn almost no interest. Keeping everything there means your money doesn't grow and it's too easy to spend.

The landscape has changed: 🏢 Traditional banks: Physical branches, lower interest rates 📱 Online banks: No branches, much higher interest (4-5% vs 0.01%) Online banks save money on buildings and pass savings to you. Many people use both: • Traditional for cash deposits • Online for savings (higher returns)

Why do online banks typically offer higher interest rates? No buildings, fewer employees = lower costs. Online banks pass these savings to customers as higher interest rates.
